The Graduate
"Would you like me to seduce you? Is that what you're trying to tell me?"
As a birthday treat mum & dad purchased 6 seats for the opening night of The Graduate, a staged reproduction of the cult movie starring Dustin Hoffman, currently showing at Dundee REP theatre (one of my favourite venues). My brov Jamie, his new girlf Adrienne and my friend Morv came with us and it was (literally) just the ticket.
There is something intensely personally about watching a live performance and The Graduate was no exception - 1st class honours material in my opinion- dynamic, thought-provoking and thoroughly enjoyable (once we got over the shock of seeing the 50-something-year-old Mrs Robinson standing; unashamedly; in nought but her high heels, whilst propositioning the poor, bewildered Benjamin Braddock!)...and here's to you Mrs Robinson; Jesus loves you more than you will know...yes indeed.
The set was very well designed and the stage changed from bedroom, to hotel lobby, to church, almost instantaneously at the swing of a long white divide.
I think the director, Terry Johnson, has done an excellent job at adapting this production for the stage. I was particularly impressed at the way he changed the focus of the last two scenes to make a comment on loveless sex; rendering it empty, meaningless and plain destructive.
Proverbs 6:32 in THEMESSAGE sums it up succinctly;
"Adultery is a brainless act,
soul destroying, self-destructive"
Personally I reckon that the theatre is under-rated and vote that we all go more often!
