On a more serious note...

...and then you watch them run for cover; those who, just moments ago, you would have called friends, kindred spirits, soul mates even; you watch as they retreat into themselves at the mere mention of this contentious subject- the serious note.

Of course a sense of obligation causes them to remain physically, but by now their emotional centres are safely stowed away and they look at you disparagingly, whilst mildly protesting;

"You don't seem to be yourself today? You know; relaxed, happy...fun to be with."

This nonchalant statement only serves to confirm to your soul, that you are more yourself now, in this moment of anguish, than you could ever be in the confines of those words: relaxed, happy, fun.

They continue. "Honestly, sometimes you can be so intense."

This statement is a powerful euphemism used to remind you of the type of relationship that they signed up to; one where both parties enjoy one another, delighting in the quirky differences between them and perhaps even exploring new ideas or socialising with other like-minded folk; the contract did not mention anything about the serious note. There was nothing in there about sharing hurts and pains or struggles or anything "intense" like that; there are people you can see to help you with those sorts of things; counsellors and the like; no need to place unnecessary strain on perfectly good relationships!

You are comforted by ancient words, spoken right into your heart about one who knows the true meaning of love;

My soul is downcast within me...

Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.

By day the Lord directs his love,
at night his song is with me-
a prayer to the God of my life.

There is one who does not find you too intense.
There is one who welcomes your depth, your hurts, your pain.
There is one who knows the true values of loving relationships.

You feel reassured about being yourself in the knowledge that you are accepted and understood by the lover of your soul.

Written for Alice.

[inspired by various accounts of the disappointing limitations of human relationships.]
